Sunburst59 schrieb:I'll apologise I advance for the length of this post. Did my first gig (New Years Eve) with the 11R using it as a standalone (straight into the mixing desk) and thought I would share my thoughts.
By way of introduction I play guitar in a semi-pro party band (classic cover ranging from rock to funk) and for the last 7 +years we have used no backline amplification; everything, including Roland drums goes straight to the desk and we each get our own monitor mix. Our PA is all Mackie (SR1500 3 way tops and Subs) and monitors are JBL Eon G2 12"; and IEM's (I don't get on with IEM and prefer the JBL's). It takes a little bit of getting use to, not having amplifiers on stage, but it means we have total control over the sound and the monitors tend to have the same mix as the front of house (FOH) so the mix that you hear on stage is exactly what the audience hears. On larger stages I will sometimes have two monitors, one with the fho mix and one with just my guitar (feed taken from the mixing desk), I can then slightly move my position on stage relative to my monitors depending in order to hear more/less of a particular mix.
History wise I have tried just about every conceivable method of getting a good guitar sound without using a conventional amp (If I use an amp and cab on stage it ruins the on stage sound for everyone else!). I have been thru most floor units (Line6, Boss etc etc), all of the Mesa Pre-amps (Studio, Formula, V-Twin, Triaxis), Rocktron, Koch Pedaltone and Studiotone, Marshall JMP1, ADA, Tech21 PSA and recently tried the Axe-Fx Ultra (wicked sounds but not user friendly in a live situation). I have also used in conjunction with many of the above Palmer PGA-05 ADIG Speaker Simulator. Best results so far have been a draw between the Koch Pedaltone (and various stomp pedals for delay, chorus etc) and a rack unit containing the Triaxis and a Lexicon MPX-G2 going into the Palmer PGA-05 (excellent sounds but not exactly the Marshall sound I prefer these days).
So after recently trying the Axe-Fx (returned it after the 15 day trial period) I bought an 11R. The Axe-FX was excellent sounding but had way too many things I would never need, the delays are impressive but unless you are in a U2 cover band I wouldn't even scratch the surface plus it is not really a unit that you can change things on-the-fly in a live situation ~ if they ever bring out a floor version with knobs for main functions it would be a killer. At the end of the day I prefer 4 really good tones: clean, semi clean, crunch and a lead-solo, I will then add fx to these sounds as the song dictates ~ the subtle nuances that the Axe-Fx can produce with ease just get lost in the mix in a live situation, so I was hoping that the 11R would supply me with the good 4 basic tones and enough fx to fit the song and sound good live.
I spent a couple of days getting my 4 basic tones and then duplicating the rigs with the relevant fx. I used an old Rocktron Midimate in Controller Mode (Button 1-4 select the rigs) and buttons 5-9 are assigned to turn on/off fx ~ really simple and allow me to have my 4 basic tones and turn on/off fx as the song dictates. I duplicated my 4 main rigs, assigning different fx to create a different rigs and just programmed these into the next bank of controllers (Bank 1 Rig A1= Button 1, A2=Button 2….Bank 2 Rig B1=Button 1, A2-Button 2…). I kept things simple and didn't bother with any pedals (volume/wha…) but will in the near future. I sent a mono feed (xlr) to the desk and got back a full band mix in one of my monitors and a guitar only mix in my other monitor.
So how did it work out? Excellent (al la Mr Burns). I had time in the sound check to balance my 4 basic sounds relevant to each other; I thought I had nailed this at home but in a full band context, thru a full PA etc they needed tweaking ~ no problem, hit edit, call up the amp and change the output volume and save! It was also amazing how much I had to tweak each rigs amp settings, at home I thought I had my 4 basic tones nailed but once the guitar was in the full band mix they all needed major tweaking, this is where you don't look at what the controls are individually set at, you just turn the knob until it sounds right ~ a classic example of this was my semi-clean tone (AC30) which sounded great in isolation but needed almost all of the treble taken off to sound great in the mix (classic tale of listen with your ears and not your eyes). All in all I was very happy with the sound and it can only improve as I get chance to tweak a little (easily done even in a live situation). The Plexi tone is wicked and I used that for most of the night using the guitars volume to clean things up a little ~ very inspiring tone to play with and very amp-like in the way it feels and responds to the guitar and the pick attack.
If I could ask for anything from Digidesigns it would be the ability to midi map rigs so that I could map say Rig A2 to midi buttons 2, 8, 12 etc on a floor controller, I know I could just duplicate the rigs and assign them to the relevant buttons but it means that if I change a setting on A2 (button 2) I would have to also then go into the rig assigned to buttons 8 & 12 and duplicate the changes. I am also getting the corrupted screen when changing rigs via midi but it is only the text on the screen that is corrupted and this does not effect the sounds or settings of the rig being loaded ~ I assume they know about this and should fix it with a firmware update. Other than that I am well happy and really think the Triaxis/Lexicon Rig I have been using will be taking aback seat. Once again ~ sorry for the length of this post.
Erfolg?
