Hi,
Thank you very much for your purchase. This information is simple and straight forward and will enable you to get the BEST sound from your amplifier and Multi-Fx unit.
This is the method::
1: You plug the guitar into your effects unit. (The usual guitar input.)
2: The output of the effects unit should be plugged into the EFFECTS (FX) RETURN of your amplifier - If your unit has stereo outputs, generally the
left output is the summed mono output. Use this output to connect to the
Fx return on your amp.
We are NOT going to plug into the usual input of your amplifier as we only want to utilize the pre-amp and Eq of our effects unit. By plugging into the effects return we can omit the amplifiers pre-amp.
Using 2 pre-amps does NOT make for a good tone. Turn your amplifiers
First gain control down to zero it is now of no use. Turning it off will
guarantee it will not add hiss to the output signal.
Also we want only to use the Eq settings in the presets of our effects unit, so we will turn the amplifiers Eq to the off or null position - that is 12 o'clock in most amps. In most all amplifiers your Eq section will be ineffective anyway now but can still output hiss if used - so turn the controls to zero..
3: TURN OFF the Speaker Simulator in the effects unit. This is VERY important. We do NOT want to use the speaker simulator if we are actually using
speakers. This will blur our sound. Without this switched on we will get a much cleaner,
clearer and sharper guitar sound.
The Speaker simulator may be switched on for every preset on your effects unit, so you
may need to turn it off in every preset and resave and write the changes to the presets.
Sometimes the effects unit has a global switch that enables the speaker simulator; again
turn it off..
You have now set up the effects unit to work at its very best with an amplifier.
As I have stated this information can be found in the manual, but you are only encouraged to experiment trying different connections and whether to use the speaker simulator setting. While this is true and good general advice... IF you are playing through an amplifier the above settings are Invariably always the BEST way to set up your effects unit.
What we have achieved is the full benefit of the gain/drive and Eq of the Effects unit, bypassing the pre-amp of the amplifier and going straight to the output stage - this is the power stage of the amplifier that provides us with all our volume.
The Eq in an effects unit is predominantly far more sensitive than the one in an amp and we are now able to make full use of it - bypassing the amplifiers completely.
In the same respect the gain and drive section of the effects unit is
also more capable than most amplifier's and we will make full use of that too.
The only controls effective on the amp will be the output volume, the Effects mix (FX return vol) and if your amp has it - a presence control.
You will have to dial in the appropriate setting for the Effects Return level
and the output level for your effects unit, but this should not be difficult
The Effects return usually only attenuates the returned signal when turned
down from full on the pot and we dont need to attenuate the signal here so leave
this at full on. We will use the output level on our effects unit to determine the
correct level. Start at 50% and we should be in roughly the right place. If you think you
need more volume, just dial up some more.
You will now be able to appreciate a clearer and sharper sound coming from your amp.
We have utilized the tone modeling capabilities of the Fx unit to the full. Using this
alone to shape the tone of your sound and not a blend of both the amp and Fx unit will
give a much clearer and fuller response.
If you have any questions regarding this set up get in touch and I will help as best I can. I am online most days at some point particularly mornings and early evenings. If you have any problems with getting the set up to work do not hesitate to contact me. If you are unhappy with this information and your purchase, contact me and tell me why. I am very happy to refund you if you have good reason, but I am quite sure you will be more than pleased with the results of this method.
The 4 Cord Method.
I was sent this method by a buyer who suggested it would be of use to some. Its pretty well known, quite flexible and some swear by it . So ..
For those of you who use an Fx unit that has its own effects send and return AND has the ability to assign Fx pre and post the Fx loop (GT-8) You might be interested to try this out .
First, you want to plug a cable from your guitar, into the Fx unit
Then, plug the output of the Fx unit, into the return on your amps effects loop
Now, run a cable from the send on the Fx unit, into the front of your amp.
Finally, run a cable from the send on your amp, into the return on your Fx unit
Now you have split the preamp from the power amp by way of the Fx unit.
YOU MUST NOW ENABLE THE LOOP BUTTON ON YOUR FX UNIT AND SET IT TO NORMAL! YOU SHOULD TURN DOWN ANY VOLUMES BEFORE THIS!
If there is a volume or a mix for your amps effects loop, it should be on full or you will only hear the effects before the effects loop
You can then send which ever effect you want into the front of the amp, and whatever effect you want after the preamp using the FX-Chain button. LP is the loop in the effects chain, so make sure you set the effects you want before the preamp to a position to the left of the LP label. It is recommended you put your distortion effects, wah, compression and FX-2 here (fx-2 has pitch shifting effects which sound weird through the amps effects loop).
All modulation, delay and reverb effects can go after the LP label, which will put them in the amps effects loop. It's probably a good idea to turn off the Fx unit inbuilt preamp as it will sound kind of crap. Use the EQ effect to further enhance the sound.
This method keeps all the tone you would have from the preamp, while giving you more control and clarity on the effects while the distortions can work normally, like a normal stomp pedal!
The most important points of this are as follows:
1. You Must Turn your Fx unit 's preamp off, and enable the "Loop" on the Fx unit You are now using your Quality Guitar Amps Preamp .
2. Understanding of the "Effects Chain" of your Fx unit must be there. Such as Modulation should be the last effect before the Power amp
3. With this set up your EQ's will be very touchy, very small adjustments will yield Large Tone Change.
4. If you are playing thru an actual guitar cab, you will not want the "Line Headphone" output setting. Selection of type of output will have to be done to set as desired.
There it is
It might be of interest to some .
Thank you again for purchasing. I hope your tone is now enhanced and that you are pleased with this info.
Please leave feedback and I will do the same in return.
Kindest regards
