The 12AX7LP and LPS sound the same, with the LPS being slightly less noisy. The only thing I must warn you about is that the 12AX7LPS can not handle very high cathode voltages, such as that which exists in the phase inverter, and tone and effects loop drivers, of the SLO - so you must use the 12AX7LP in those positions. I recommend that you use a 12AX7LPS only in the "first" position (the tube closest to the input jack) and the 12AX7LP in the others. The "XL mod" boosts the bottom end of the amp, and was originally offered as an option. However, it became popular to the point that we made it the standard offering, so that all Hot Rod amps built since about '97 or '98 have this mod. - Mike Soldano -
