D’Angelico Guitars Welcomes Head Luthier, NYC’s Victor Baker
Victor Baker, renowned maker of archtop guitars, was named Head Luthier of D’Angelico Guitars on Monday, June 29th. Baker will be building from the D’Angelico workshop in New York City, marking the first return to NYC-based production for the company since the 1970s. “It is beyond exciting to have D’Angelico guitars being made in New York City once again,” says Baker. “I’m proud to lend my hands.”
Beyond producing the Master Builders that are exact replicas of John D’Angelico’s 1942 Excels and New Yorkers, Baker will also be building customized one-off’s—the way D’Angelico operated his first shop in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Customers will be able to tweak and amend nearly any aspect of their guitar’s design, making it entirely their own. Eventually, there will be a Master Builder version of every D’Angelico archtop model, all built by Baker.
D’Angelico Guitars’ legacy is defined by making the best archtop guitars in the world. In honoring their history, it is only fitting that production should return home to New York City. “As a New York brand, we’re proud to once again offer guitars made right here in the city,” says CEO Brenden Cohen. When compared to original Master Luthier and Founder, John D’Angelico, Baker nods to an old photo of John that hangs above his workbench. “He’ll be keeping an eye on me,” Baker says with a smile.
