Patch Compatibility 2112 to 2120
section updated on 2nd December 1998
Bulk dump procedures
may be interchangeable between different versions of the operating system of the 2112 or 2120. All program patches contained in the bulk dump have to be compatible. This means that there is not much use for a complete backup for a 2120 in form of a bulk dump from a 2112.
Program dump procedures
Some patches (a.k.a. program dump procedures) wrote out by a 2112 version 1.01, 1.02 or 1.03 may fully crash a 2120 version 2.02! The only way to recover the machine crashed this way is a factory reset (Switch unit on while pressing Preamp and Mod simultaneously. An "*" will appear in the Display. Release the buttons again. Press the Mod button to do a Factory reset.)
One reason for such a crash is the usage of user defaults (although user default SysEx messages themselves seem to be compatible) in the program. The 2120 seems to have severe problems in interpreting program dump messages originating from a 2112 containing user default settings.
Workaround number 1 for this is to manually go through every module of your patch which does contain such a user default. In your 2112 just change one parameter of these modules slightly and store the program. After this turn it back to the original value and store it again. The user default setting should read "custom" now. The probability that the 2120 is able to read patch cleaned up like this is high (in fact I never had any problem again when treating my patches like this). I know that it's not very nice to loose all user defaults, but I haven't found any better trick till now.
Workaround number 2 is better suited for large numbers of patches to transform from 2112 to 2120. Save all patches from your 2112 to a patch librarian in SysEx format (one at a time, don't use bulk dump, but dump single programs!). Do a factory reset on your 2112. Reload all patches and again save them. Now all user defaults will be cleared and the setting reads "custom" for every module where a user default was used before. The settings are the same as before of course. Now save all patches again (again, one at a time), like you did before. The patches save this way can be loaded by a 2120 (not guaranteed, please post on the group if you encounter problems with this).
After the factory reset all user patches will be lost forever. Thus make a backup of your user settings in form of a bulk dump before experimenting with any foreign patches!
