Metallica Equipment Manager Zach Harmon on The Bandss Mean Machines
Kirk Hammett
Kirks favorite live guitar is still his original 1987 ESP KH-2, details Harmon. He also has an ESP KH-3 hardtail he calls the Invisible Kid. Kirk asked me for a marker and did the artwork on that guitar himself. The fretboard of his ESP M-2 Frankenstein is inlayed with The Monster is Loose, and the eyes are LEDs that light up. Very Cool. Then theres his 1987 Gibson Les Paulwe call that The Tiger Stripe, a 1959 Fender Tele with a blonde finish, a 1963 Fender Strat in seafoam green, a 1959 Les Paul, a Gibson ES-335, and a Martin D-28. He uses Ernie Ball strings, gauged .011-.048. His amp rig includes Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier rackmount amps, Mesa/Boogie Strategy 400 amps, and vintage Marshalls. For the album, we used a lot of Line 6 pedals, and Kirk also has a Dunlop CryBaby wah and a DigiTech Whammy.
James Hetfield
The graphic on James original ESP Viper baritone was designed by him and hand-painted by Kirk Taylor of Custom Design Studios in Novato, Californiahes the guy who also paints James hotrods and motorcycles. This guitar was used as the model for the ESP LTD Grynch. His ESP Explorersin black and chrome diamond platedate back to the Load tour. He decided if diamond plate was good enough for his trucks, why not his guitars? He also has an ESP LTD 7-string that we call The Goblin and an ESP LTD F-300M. His 1976 Gibson Explorer is called Rusty, and James did the rust work himself. The 1973 Gibson Les Paul is known as Uncle Miltyafter comedian Milton Berlebecause it sounds burly. James did all the custom work, including the racing stripe and the iron cross. It also has custom pickups made by EMG. Finally, theres a 1959 Gibson Les Paul, and he played a Fender Danny Gatton Tele on the song St. Anger. His strings are Ernie Ballgauged .010-.046, and .013-.058 for the Viper baritone. James amp rack includes a Mesa/Boogie Triaxis and a Strategy 400. He also plays a Diezel head loaded with EL34s, a Wizard, a Marshall DSL, a Roland JC-120, and a Sears Magnatone. For each song on St. Anger wed use a combination of many amps to construct complex crunch, lead, rhythm, and clean tones.
