Gentle wind (the maid‘s lament)
As I strolled down by the harbour
On a windy autumn day
On the pier I spied a maiden
gazing out across the spray
pleading softly with the gale
eyes so fearful face so pale
Chorus
gentle wind oh hear my calling
gentle wind I beg of thee
won‘t you find my darling Donald
won‘t you bring him home to me
It‘s been six long months since he was
pressed onto the Victory
not a word from him since then
oh gentle wind, pray, where is he
do the waves still keep him safe
has he found a watery grave
Does he sleep of nights or can‘t he
close an eye for grief and woe
does he ever weep for my sake
gentle wind I miss him so
tossed and tumbled on the sea
tell me is he true to me
Wind, pray keep him safe in battle
shelter him from reef and foe
bring him back into my arms and
I won‘t ever let him go
out again across the brine
I‘ll be his and he‘ll be mine
